This year the Government Information Office of the Republic of China on Taiwan is holding a competition to design an international English-language website to provide support to Taiwan's efforts to be observer status in the World Health Organization.
The website design competition invite webpage designers from both Taiwan and abroad to display their talents in an effort to garner more support worldwide for Taiwan's entry into the WHO.
The focal theme of the website should be Taiwan's contribution in the areas of medicine and health. Taiwan humanitarian medical assistance and the principle of health for all should be the key themes of the website. The content of the website should note that disease knows no borders, and that the world needs to create a public health and medical network to fight disease. The website should also highlight the fact that the WHO has amended the International Health Regulations, adding the principle of universal application and that all of humankind should be covered. Taiwan presently is not a member nation of the WHO and as a result is unable to obtain the latest information on disease outbreaks or other assistance. This compromises the health and safety of the 23 million people of Taiwan in comparison with the rest of the world. Just as Taiwan is not able to stage the fight against disease alone, the world community also requires Taiwan's contribution to medicine and health care.
Webpage designers of any nationality are welcome to take part in the competition. However, the language of use in the website must be English. The designer can organize the main webpage and sections of the website as he or she deems appropriate. However, there must be a unit entitled "Show Your Support". Participants in the competition need to invite people sympathetic to Taiwan's efforts to join the WHO to sign their names in the appropriate place. The sign-up area should have columns for the supporter's name, nationality and email address. In judging which website design will be selected the winner, the Government Information Office will take into consideration the number of signatures on the website of each designer.
A wide variety of prizes and awards are being offered to those who rank favorably in the competition. In the website category, there will be a first place winner, as well as prizes for second and third places, and honorable mentions. The person winning first place will receive a cash award of US$ 1,000 and one roundtrip Economy Class plane ticket to visit Taiwan. In addition, that person will receive a complimentary five-day, four-night stay at a four-star hotel in Taiwan.
